Nazri Aziz: Why are we doubting the quality of local universities?

June 15, 2010: Nazri Aziz in his explanation for the reduce scholarships (from 1,500 to 300)for overseas studies says that more students will be placed in local universities, with the exception of those obtaining a place in top university in critical field would be sent overseas.

This once again signal that the Government is running low of money. No more money?? where is all the money??

It is sad that the Government has to resort to denying its bright citizens the opportunities for elite education. What is our current Government doing for its citizen??

The Minister lame reasons are: "The intention is, firstly, to reduce expenditure in sending student overseas. Secondly, we must ensure that local universities has bright students. Why are we doubting the quality of local universities?

I find it hard to understand our Minister's mentality. Why send bright student to low graded local universities? Is it because bright students can help bring up the local university standard? If this argument is accepted, no wonder Malaysia remains where it is today.

Why doubt our local universities? I don't know except in the same paper (the Star 15 June 2010) it is reported that Nor Ashman (the youngest son of Najib) was studying in Georgetown University in Washington DC two years ago. Why was he no studying in University Malaya, or USM, UTM etc?

Please make it a point that all Ministers can only send their children to local universities to help lift the universities standard before denying our brights students. Anyway, I think our brights students can easily get scholarships from others countries. Just don't blame them later and label them as ungrateful.
